I have a suggestion for a minor alteration to the bidding process in the summer. Small, simple change: Only the person who starts the bidding has the option to assign a one year contract. All others, if they win the bid, must assign either a two or three year contract.
The reason I would suggest this is to reward the person who ‘finds’ the player. I don’t think it is fair that someone does all the digging and research to identify a player and other GMs just bid because they have a roster spot they can fill and they think 'if it doesn't work out I can drop him for free'. Also it would discourage bidding just to drive up prices for others.
I don’t think it would affect ‘big-name’ players as those guys would always get multi-year deals anyways.
